NOTES FROM THE COMPOSER
In the Fall of 2020, Peter Lewis, the conductor of the Quabbin (Massachusetts, USA) Regional High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble, created a commission for a piece based on his students’ thoughts and experiences surrounding the Covid pandemic. The resulting work was titled ARISE, which the wind ensemble premiered in 2021. The major events shaping our world in the years 2020 and 2021 -- worldwide pandemic, racial tension and violence, unsustainable political and social vitriol and aggression, wars around the world, and catastrophic environmental events -- shaped the thoughts of the students and myself as we created that composition. Reflections on Life in the Time of Covid is based on that earlier work. This music reflects on the complexity and range of thoughts and feelings during that time, from the darkest hours of isolation, to the unique moments of shared community, hope and joy.
